High ranking for MBS Partners in the 2005 VAR 100

Robert W. Scott, Accpimtomg Technology, comments on the growing international operation of software VARs and presents the 2005 VAR 100 ranking list of software resellers based on their revenue.

Things have changed in the last year since Accounting Technology published its first VAR 100, ranking accounting software resellers based on their revenue. The top players are far more involved in international markets than a year ago, and they are growing.

Defining an accounting software VAR is as much a part of the process of compiling a list of the 100 largest organizations as determining revenue is.

All resellers that handle accounting software also handle other products, such as hardware and networking, while most derive a substantial portion of their revenue from services. Some of the best sell their own software packages. The revenue for the VARs listed here reflects revenue from all sources.

The decision to classify VARs as accounting software resellers relies heavily on how these companies present themselves to the public. Those organizations that feature accounting software lines prominently on their Web sites received prompt considered for this listing. Those that emphasize lines, such as Citrix, or their own third-party products more than they do accounting software were given a lower priority.

The reported revenue figures are subject to interpretation as there are not even a handful of reselling organizations that are publicly held. Ranking privately held VARs requires some faith in those organizations to provide accurate revenue figures. For organizations that did not provide sales figures, estimates were made based on sales per employee. When organizations reported the same revenue amounts, the company with the smaller staff was ranked higher.
